What Are Dental Implants?
If you have lost one or more permanent teeth, Drs. Afshar and Afshar may recommend dental implants in Cameron Park, California. A dental implant replaces both the missing tooth and its root. A dental implant is made up of a titanium post, which fuses with the jawbone, and a dental restoration, like a dental crown or bridge. Dental implants are designed to look and function like your natural teeth. The dental implant process has three phases:

Implant Post Placement
The implant post is first surgically placed into the socket of the missing tooth. During the healing process, we recommend that you eat soft, cold foods and warm soup. Dr. Afshar and Dr. Afshar will give you post-op instructions to make the healing process as comfortable as possible.

Osseointegration
During osseointegration, the jawbone will heal around the implant post and fuse with it. This provides a solid foundation. Osseointegration takes time. Often, patients need to wait until the implant is completely fused with the bone, which takes several months, before having the replacement tooth or teeth attached. Other patients can have the implant post and replacement teeth placed in a single visit.

Restoration Placement
The last phase is the placement of replacement teeth. Depending on your needs, a dental crown, dental bridge, or denture will be constructed to attach to your implant. Your restoration will match the shade of your natural teeth. The construction of restorations can take time, so our dentists may provide a temporary restoration in the interim. Once your crown, bridge, or denture is complete, our dentists will attach it to your dental implant.
