The best way to know if you are taking care of your mouth as best you should is to follow this 7-part basic checklist. This makes it easy to understand the basics of dental hygiene and oral health care.

Brush: Brush your teeth twice a day, for 2 minutes each time. Think “2×2.” If you have a hard time taking enough time on your teeth, try setting a timer or listening to your favorite song for 2 minutes.

Floss: Floss every day, once a day, for 2-3 minutes. It doesn’t matter if it happens before or after brushing, as long as it happens.

Mouthwash: An over-the-counter therapeutic mouthwash can benefit the oral hygiene routines of some people. Do not give to children under age 6.

Eat Well:  Eat foods that are nutrient-dense, paying special attention to calcium, phosphorous, protein, and vitamins. If you eat sticky, starchy, or sugary foods occasionally, be sure to brush and floss extra-thoroughly that day.

Chew Gum: Consider chewing sugar-free gum after eating to increase saliva production. Saliva is your body’s first defense against cavities, and helps keep your teeth clean.

Drink Water: Drinking lots of water is not only good for your overall health, but it’s great for your teeth! It helps clean your mouth and remove food particles and debris.

Visit Your Dentist: Visit your dentist at least every 6 months! This will help catch any problems early, and professional cleanings will help support your at-home oral health habits. If you are in the Cameron Park, California area, call Country Club Dental at 530.677.4457 to schedule an appointment.

As you follow this checklist, your oral health will improve and you will start to see the smile you’ve always wanted!
