The minor discomfort caused by chipped tooth or a minor dental fracture might be treated with a standard dental filling. However, a more significant dental fracture, or fracture on a tooth with a shallow amount of natural tooth enamel, might need a dental crown restoration.

This piece of dental work is hollow to allow it to be anchored on an abutment formed from the dentin layer within the tooth. Dr. Sonny Afshar can create the abutment by removing all the remaining tooth enamel, then making an impression of the abutment and the surrounding teeth. This also includes the teeth in your bite pattern that will connect with the dental crown.

The impression will be sent to a dental lab where your dental crown will be created. A temporary crown is cemented over the abutment to protect the sensitive abutment. It’s important to keep in mind that this hard plastic cap doesn’t restore the tooth’s function. It is merely a protective measure.

A brief second appointment will be needed when your dental crown is ready. The temporary crown will be removed and Dr. Sonny Afshar will cement the it in place with a strong dental adhesive.
